Quick answer. Open View > Show outline, select the missing section title, apply a Heading style such as Heading 2, and confirm the title appears in the left outline and jumps to the correct place.

Use the fictional practice file and independent answer check. Work in a permitted copy.

Before you start. The outline may hide a heading that was manually removed; Google also documents a right-click Add to document outline action for that case. Subtitle style is not a heading style.

1. Spot the visual-only heading

In the fictional practice document, Materials Checklist looks like a section title because someone made it bold. The outline lists Workshop Plan and Room Setup but not Materials Checklist. Formatting that only changes weight or size does not reliably establish document structure, so inspect the applied paragraph style first.

Checkpoint: Materials Checklist is absent from outline.

2. Show the outline in Docs

Open View and select Show outline so the left navigation panel is visible. If the panel is merely closed, open it before changing any text. This distinguishes a hidden outline panel from a missing heading entry and prevents unnecessary formatting changes to an already structured document.

Checkpoint: Outline panel visible before changing style.

3. Apply a real heading style

Select the Materials Checklist line and open the paragraph style control currently showing Normal text. Choose Heading 2 to match the Room Setup section level. Google Docs adds recognized heading styles to its outline; a subtitle style is not a substitute for this section heading.

Checkpoint: Materials Checklist uses Heading 2.

4. Handle a manually removed entry

If the line already has Heading 2 but remains absent, it may have been removed from the outline. Select the heading text, right-click, and choose Add to document outline where the current interface offers that action. Do this only for the intended line; do not reset every heading in the document.

Checkpoint: Removed entry is re-added only if needed.

5. Verify both label and navigation

The left outline should list Materials Checklist between Workshop Plan and Room Setup. Click that entry and confirm the document scrolls to the checklist above the pens-and-badges text. If it points elsewhere, recheck the selected paragraph and style instead of trusting a visual resemblance alone.

Checkpoint: Outline order and destination are correct.

Verify the result

The outline shows Workshop Plan at Heading 1 level and Materials Checklist and Room Setup as Heading 2 entries in that order. Materials Checklist remains above its pens-and-badges body text, and clicking its outline entry navigates to that section. Merely bold text is no longer used as the structure signal.

If it still does not work

If the outline stays empty, confirm the paragraph has a Heading style rather than only bold text or Subtitle. If a styled heading was removed from the outline, right-click it and choose Add to document outline, then click the entry to test navigation.
