Quick answer: Type label:workshop-updates is:unread in Gmail search. This combines a label filter with unread status. In the fictional five-message practice index, W-101 and W-103 match; the read, other-label, and unlabeled messages do not.

Before starting: Gmail search can display a conversation when one message inside it matches a status condition; inspect the specific matching message before acting. A label applies to messages, not every message in an entire thread. Use a simple hyphenated practice label to avoid name parsing issues. This search is read-only; do not bulk-mark results as read.

1. Predict the two matches

The practice index contains five fictional messages. W one-oh-one and W one-oh-three are unread and carry the workshop-updates label. W one-oh-two has the same label but is already read. W one-oh-four is unread under another label, and W one-oh-five has no label. The expected result is exactly the first and third records, not all unread mail.

Checkpoint: W-101 and W-103 match; One read decoy; Two out-of-label decoys.

2. Enter both operators

In Gmail's search bar, type label colon workshop dash updates, a space, then is colon unread. The exact query is displayed on screen and in the guide. Google documents label and is-status operators and says they can be combined. Press Enter. The first condition narrows the project; the second narrows it to unread messages. There is no need to build a permanent filter for this one-time search.

Checkpoint: label:workshop-updates is:unread; Press Enter; No saved filter required.

3. Read the result carefully

Compare the results with the five-message answer file. The two matches have both the label and unread status. Gmail sometimes displays results as conversations; a thread may be visible because one message inside it matched. Open the relevant conversation and inspect the specific message before marking the whole thread read or moving it. That distinction matters in shared project mailboxes.

Checkpoint: Two matching messages; Inspect thread contents; Avoid bulk changes.

4. Fix a missing or extra match

If a known unread project message is missing, check that the message itself has the expected label and that the label spelling in the search query is correct. If an apparently read conversation appears, it may contain another unread matching message. If your label includes spaces or unusual characters, choose it from Gmail's search suggestions or confirm its exact search syntax rather than silently changing the query.

Checkpoint: Check label spelling; Inspect message status; Thread may contain match.

Check the finished result

In the fictional practice index, only W one-oh-one and W one-oh-three pass both conditions. The read project message and two other unread messages are excluded for different reasons. A successful search helps you review work; it is not evidence that messages were read, replied to, or cleared. Leave the result list unchanged unless you intend a separate action.

Expected answer: The query label:workshop-updates is:unread matches W-101 and W-103 in the fictional index. W-102 has the label but is read; W-104 is unread under another label; W-105 is unread but has no label. A real Gmail conversation may appear because one message within it matches; inspect the message before assuming every item in the thread shares the same status.

If it still fails

If the result set is wrong, check the exact label name in label:workshop-updates is:unread and inspect which message within each conversation is unread. Search does not mark messages as read.
