Quick answer. Search Gmail for is:muted, select the intended conversation, then choose More > Unmute. Search is:muted again to check that thread no longer matches. Unmuting does not automatically return an archived old message to Inbox.
Use the fictional thread scenario to identify the intended search result, then compare the expected state with the answer check. Never unmute an unrelated real conversation.
Before you start. Gmail notes exceptions to muted-thread inbox behavior, including messages addressed directly to you. Use only authorized fictional mail; never capture an owner's real inbox. No live test thread has yet been created for this package.
1. Search the muted state directly
In an authorized fictional mailbox, search Gmail for the exact operator is:muted. This is more reliable than scrolling Inbox, because muted replies often bypass it and remain archived. Match the practice subject before taking any action; do not unmute an unrelated real conversation.
Checkpoint: Exact query: is:muted.
2. Confirm the intended conversation
Open or select Harbor Workshop draft schedule and read its subject and sender. The fictional sender in the exercise is teammate@example.com. If the conversation is not present, do not claim it was muted; the operator only shows threads matching the current mailbox state.
Checkpoint: Correct subject and sender before Unmute.
3. Unmute the thread
With the intended conversation selected, open More and choose Unmute. Google's Gmail help documents this control. Unmuting changes how later replies are treated. It does not retroactively move an old archived message into Inbox, so leave any separate move-to-Inbox action outside this exercise.
Checkpoint: More > Unmute on the same thread.
4. Rerun the state check
Search is:muted again. The specific practice thread should no longer match, while other muted threads, if any, may still be listed. This is the outcome check. If the thread still appears, reopen it and verify that Unmute was actually chosen rather than a different More action.
Checkpoint: Practice thread absent from is:muted results.
5. Understand the Inbox limit
Google says muted replies usually skip Inbox, with exceptions for mail addressed directly to you or added to To or Cc. The purpose here is to correct a thread's muted state, not to guarantee delivery position for every future message. Do not send a test mail to another person just to demonstrate this change.
Checkpoint: Unmuted state checked; no Inbox promise.
Verify the result
The fictional thread appears in results for is:muted while muted and no longer appears in that search after Unmute. A prior archived message may remain in All Mail; unmuting alone does not prove it returned to Inbox. No email is sent as part of this lesson.
If it still does not work
If the practice thread does not appear under is:muted, verify the signed-in mailbox, type the operator exactly, and check that the fictional thread was actually muted. Do not unmute a different result to force a demonstration. If the intended thread still appears after Unmute, reopen that same conversation, verify the action in its More menu, and rerun is:muted. Check muted state separately from whether an older archived message is in Inbox.
