Quick answer. Expand Gmail's left menu and More first. If the label still is not in the normal list, open Settings > See all settings > Labels, find the existing label, and set its label-list visibility to Show. Then check the sidebar and a permitted labeled test message without deleting the label.

Use the fictional practice file and independent answer check. Work in a permitted practice copy.

Before you start. The practice sheet uses a fictional label called SOW Practice and a fictional message called Workshop receipt — practice. It is a paper fixture, not a claim that these exist in your account. Use a permitted mailbox and harmless existing test message; keep personal mail out of screenshots. If you have no suitable test message, check only the label visibility and do not claim the message association was verified.

Optional setup for a reproducible test

To create the starting state in your own disposable mailbox, choose an existing harmless test message, create a label such as SOW Practice, and apply it to that message. In Settings > See all settings > Labels, set that label to Hide in the label list. Confirm the label still exists in Settings and remains attached to the same message before following the repair below. Do not send an email solely for this exercise or change a real work label. Restore Show when finished. If your Gmail version presents different controls, verify the live wording before changing anything.

1. Expand the left menu first

In Gmail on the web, expand the left navigation if it is collapsed. Open More if available and scan the full list before changing a setting. A collapsed menu can make an existing label seem missing. If you can already see the desired label under More, confirm its name and proceed only if you want it visible in the regular sidebar.

Checkpoint: The label is either found under More or confirmed absent from the visible list.

2. Find the label in Settings

Open Settings, choose See all settings, and go to Labels. Search the page for your exact existing test label; the fictional exercise calls it SOW Practice. If the label does not exist in this settings list, visibility is not the cause. Check whether you are in the intended Gmail account before creating any new label.

Checkpoint: The same existing label is present in the Labels settings list.

3. Choose Show in the label list

For the existing label, set its visibility in the label list to Show. Gmail's label management separates showing a label in the list from whether a message carries that label. Do not delete and recreate it; doing so can lose the original association you intended to preserve. The current English wording should be checked in the live Gmail interface.

Checkpoint: Show is selected for the existing label's list visibility.

4. Recheck the sidebar

Return to the inbox and inspect the left sidebar. The same label should now be visible in the regular label list. If it is only under More, recheck that you changed list visibility for the intended label. A sidebar change is an interface state, so verify it visually in your own account rather than assuming the settings toggle alone completed the repair.

Checkpoint: The label appears in the intended sidebar section.

5. Check the message association separately

Open a harmless test message that already carried the label and confirm that the label is still applied. The fictional practice sheet calls this message Workshop receipt — practice. If the sidebar label is visible but the message has no label, that is a separate application problem; changing label visibility cannot attach a label to an unlabeled message.

Checkpoint: The same test message retains its label association.

Verify the result

A correct visibility repair leaves the label itself intact, sets Show in the label list, displays that same label in the sidebar, and preserves any preexisting association with the harmless test message. Use your own disposable test label to verify the actual sidebar and message states.

If it still does not work

If the label is missing even from Labels settings, check the account and whether it was ever created. If it exists in settings but remains out of the main sidebar, recheck Show versus the More section. If the label appears in the sidebar but the message has no label, apply the existing label to that test message separately; do not delete the label.
