Turn one wide table page landscape while neighboring Google Docs pages stay portrait. Use Pages format, section breaks, Apply to This section, and a three-page check.

Use the three-page fictional practice document, the outline CSV, and the answer check. Work in a copy.

Before you start

The companion video uses clearly labelled illustrative diagrams based on the downloadable example. Menu wording may vary with app version or account. Keep the source file available for comparison.

1. Prepare a three-part practice document

Download the DOCX seed, upload it to Google Drive, and open it with Google Docs. You can convert it to a native Google Doc for this exercise, or create a new Google Doc from the CSV outline. The DOCX starts with three portrait pages: workshop summary, wide comparison table, and action notes. Use Pages format, because mixed page orientation is unavailable in pageless mode. Keep an untouched copy before editing. After import, check the page count, table rows, and page breaks: fonts and pagination can change when Word files open in Google Docs.

Check: Summary; Wide table; Action notes.

2. Surround the wide section with breaks

Insert a section break before the wide table and another after it using Insert > Break > Section break (next page) when each part should begin on a separate page. The DOCX seed has ordinary page breaks at those boundaries. In an imported working copy, replace each retained page break with a section break rather than stacking both breaks, which could create an empty page. Turn on View > Show section breaks if you need to see the boundaries. This gives the table a section that can have its own orientation instead of changing the whole document.

Check: Break before table; Break after table; Show section breaks.

3. Apply landscape to this section

Click inside the wide-table section. Open File > Page setup, choose Pages if needed, then choose Landscape. In the Apply to control, select This section, not Whole document or This section forward. Confirm the dialog. Google also offers a context command to change the orientation of selected content, but the section route gives a clear boundary to verify.

Check: Click inside table section; Page setup > Landscape; Apply to: This section.

4. Verify all three pages

Inspect the document from top to bottom. The summary page should remain taller than it is wide, the table page should be wider than it is tall, and the action-notes page should return to portrait. Recheck all six table rows and widen columns if the imported table stays narrow or text clips. Make sure the text after the second break did not join the landscape section. The page after the table is a key part of this test.

Check: Page 1 portrait; Page 2 landscape; Page 3 portrait.

5. If every page turned landscape

If the entire document changed, reopen Page setup while the cursor sits in the middle section and inspect Apply to. Whole document will affect every page; This section forward will also affect later pages. Use This section, then verify both boundaries. If the section option is missing, check that the document is in Pages format and that section breaks actually surround the table.

Check: Check Apply to; Confirm Pages format; Confirm two breaks.

Expected result

The checked document has three sections: page 1 portrait, page 2 landscape, page 3 portrait. The page-2 section contains the wide table; the two neighboring sections remain portrait.

Common mistakes

  • Orientation controls are unavailable in pageless format; switch the document to Pages.
  • A whole-document orientation choice changes every page. Set Apply to This section for the wide-table section.
  • Use section breaks around the target section and inspect both neighboring pages afterward.
  • On DOCX import, check page breaks and pagination first. Replace retained page breaks with section breaks so you do not introduce a blank page.

Official references and evidence

References checked 15 October 2026. The DOCX seed, outline, and answer check are original fictional material. The DOCX was rendered and visually checked as three portrait pages before import. Google Docs may reflow it, so verify the imported working copy. Video panels are illustrative, not app screen recordings.
