Hide the page number on the first page of a Google Doc while later pages keep their numbers. In this three-page exercise, the cover is blank, the introduction displays 2, and the checklist displays 3. Download the three-page fictional DOCX seed, text outline, and answer check.
Before starting: Page numbers require Pages format; Pageless documents do not display them. This method hides the cover number without restarting the sequence. If your introduction must display 1, that requires a separate section-numbering workflow. No live account workflow has yet been reproduced for this package.
1. Build a three-page practice copy
For a ready-made starting file, upload the DOCX seed to Drive and open it with Google Docs. It starts with a cover, introduction, and checklist on separate portrait pages and has no page numbers in any footer. You can also build the same three parts in a new Google Doc from the text outline, adding page breaks between them. Keep the example fictional. After import, scroll through and confirm that there are exactly three pages and that the checklist table is complete; conversion can reflow fonts, rows, and page breaks. If the content spills onto a fourth page, correct the layout before adding numbers.
Checkpoint: Cover; Introduction; Checklist.
2. Check Pages format first
Google Docs page numbers do not appear in Pageless format. Open File > Page setup and make sure Pages is selected. If you switch from Pageless, review the whole document because lines and page breaks may move. Return to the three-page practice copy before you add the footer, so the result check has a stable starting point.
Checkpoint: File > Page setup; Choose Pages; Recheck page breaks.
4. Check pages two and three
With the cover number hidden, the introduction is still physical page two and displays 2. The checklist displays 3. Inspect all three pages in order. Do not mistake a blank cover footer for a restarted sequence. If a requirement says the first numbered page must display 1, use section-specific numbering and verify that different result separately.
Checkpoint: Cover blank; Introduction 2; Checklist 3.
5. Catch the common mistake
If the cover still has a number, double-click its footer, check Different first page, and remove only the number in that first-page footer. If numbers disappear everywhere, confirm the document is in Pages format and that the later-page footer still contains a page-number field. Do not remove the ordinary footer to clear the cover.
Checkpoint: Cover footer empty; Later footer has number field; Keep the ordinary footer.
Verify the result
Scroll from cover through checklist. The cover should have no visible page number, the introduction should display 2, and the checklist should display 3 in the same footer position. Export a PDF and inspect it too, because that is what a recipient will read. The practice answer check records this one outcome.
Expected result: Cover page: no visible page number. Introduction: 2. Checklist: 3. Pages format must be enabled. This method does not restart numbering at 1 on page two.
Official instructions: Google Docs page-number help and Google Workspace import guide, checked 15 October 2026. The DOCX seed was rendered and visually checked as three unnumbered pages before import; inspect the Google Docs conversion separately.
