Change Gmail's Undo Send cancellation period to 30 seconds and understand the hard limit of that window. Download the fictional practice and answer check.

Before starting: Undo Send only works during the selected 5, 10, 20, or 30-second cancellation period. It is not a way to recall a delivered message later. A live end-to-end send test must use an authorized self-addressed fictional message; no such test has yet been run for this package.

1. Find the setting on desktop

In Gmail on a computer, open Settings > See all settings > General > Undo Send. Google currently offers 5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds as the cancellation period. Choose 30 seconds. This changes how long the Undo control remains available after a future send; it does not change messages already delivered.

Checkpoint: Settings > See all settings; General > Undo Send; Choose 30 seconds.

2. Save and verify the choice

Scroll to the bottom of Settings and click Save Changes. Return to General > Undo Send to confirm it still reads 30 seconds. Merely selecting the option without saving is a common reason a later test seems to use the old window. Record the setting before you send any practice mail, and keep the practice message fictional.

Checkpoint: Click Save Changes; Reopen General; Confirm 30 seconds.

3. Know what Undo actually does

Immediately after you send, Gmail shows a confirmation with Undo. Clicking Undo within your selected period reopens the message as a draft so you can correct it. Google's help describes this as a short cancellation period. It is not an unlimited recall feature, and the recipient cannot be reached back through this button once the window has passed.

Checkpoint: Look for Undo promptly; Draft reopens; Window expires.

4. Use a safe self-addressed test

If you are authorized to test in a Gmail account, compose the fictional practice message to your own address. Press Send, then click Undo immediately in the confirmation. Inspect the returned draft. Do not send a test to a colleague or customer, and do not claim we observed live delivery until an actual authorized test has been recorded.

Checkpoint: Send only to yourself; Click Undo immediately; Inspect returned draft.

5. Avoid a false sense of recall

The common error is thinking Undo Send can remove an email from someone's inbox hours later. It cannot. If the 30-second window is gone, stop looking for Undo and follow your normal correction process. Also do not confuse this setting with a scheduled email, which stays pending until its future send time and has different controls.

Checkpoint: Not hours later; Different from Schedule send; Use correction process.

Verify the result

The answer check has two parts: the saved cancellation period reads thirty seconds, and an authorized self-addressed test returns to Drafts only when Undo is clicked promptly. Even without running that test, the first part can be verified safely in Settings. The practical habit is to pause before sending and use Undo immediately when needed.

Expected result: Gmail Settings > See all settings > General > Undo Send shows Send cancellation period: 30 seconds after Save Changes. Immediately after an authorized test send, Undo can return the message to a draft during the window. After 30 seconds the setting cannot recall a delivered message.

Official instructions: Gmail help, checked 15 October 2026. The companion video includes one actual English Gmail settings capture of the 30-second choice before saving. That choice was canceled; it does not demonstrate a completed settings change or a sent message. Other panels are illustrative diagrams.
