Excel Formula Shows as Text? Check These 3 Causes

See the difference between Show Formulas across a sheet, a cell formatted as Text, and a leading apostrophe. Use a fictional three-tab practice workbook and verify 24, 36, and 30 as the calculated results.

An equals sign printed in a cell can mean three different things. Use the fictional practice workbook and independent answer check to diagnose before editing important data. The companion video uses clearly labelled illustrative diagrams; it does not present a live Excel recording.

First decide whether the problem affects a sheet or a cell

If many formula cells show expressions at once, check the worksheet display switch Formulas > Show Formulas. Turn it off and compare a known cell with its expected answer. This setting changes what the worksheet displays; it does not repair a broken formula.

If only one cell displays the expression, select it and inspect both the number format and the formula bar. A cell formatted as Text can retain a formula as literal text. Choose General and then re-enter the expression. Merely changing the number format may leave the existing text unchanged. A leading apostrophe before = is a separate way to store the expression as text; remove only that prefix in the target cell.

Practice the three fixes

  1. Open Show Formulas in the practice workbook. Its inputs are 3 and 8, and D2 initially displays 24. Turn Show Formulas on to reproduce the literal display, then turn it off and confirm 24 again.
  2. Open Text Format. D2 is blank and preformatted as Text. Enter =B2*C2 to reproduce the literal display. Set D2 to General, re-enter =B2*C2, and confirm 36 from 4 × 9.
  3. Open Leading Apostrophe. D2 starts blank. Type '=B2*C2 to reproduce the literal display. Then remove the leading apostrophe, re-enter =B2*C2, and confirm 30 from 5 × 6. In a real workbook, inspect the formula bar before assuming this prefix is the cause.

Do not use a bulk Find and Replace in a real workbook until you know why the text is present. Text-formatted IDs and leading apostrophes can be intentional.

If the result still looks wrong

Check that D2 begins with an equals sign, that it references B2 and C2 on the same tab, and that the inputs are numbers. If Excel shows an old numeric result rather than formula text, investigate calculation mode as a separate issue. These three checks target literal formula display only.

Does changing Text to General calculate the existing entry automatically? Not reliably. Re-enter the expression after changing the format.

Is Show Formulas the same as Text format? No. Show Formulas is a worksheet display setting; Text format affects cell parsing.

Microsoft's formula troubleshooting guide documents Show Formulas, Text formatting and re-entry. The inconsistent formula guide shows the Formulas tab control. Microsoft's COUNTBLANK example also notes that pasting a formula from some browsers can add a leading apostrophe, and describes removing it. Reviewed 11 October 2026.
